How do teachers use 4to12maths on a daily basis. ?

We have compiled a number of 'Use Cases' to show how different types of schools with different resources available both in school and at home use 4to12maths. We hope that by showing how teachers use the website that you can pick and choose best practices that suit you and your teaching environement.

Obviously it's great to hear positive comments about the website, however we have paid particular attention to all suggestions received, some of which are outlined below AND are now part of the continuous improvement process at 4to12maths. Watch the 'News' section of the website for details new features launched.




Use Case #1 : A classroom with multiple classes

How I use 4to12maths in my class

· I setup my students & classes on 4to12maths.com with the grade relevant to each student. This allows me to select a grade relevant to each student’s ability.

· During school hours the student’s use laptops and iPod touch devices to practice and master skills.

· Not all children have internet access at home, those that do practice the maths skills at home also.


What I like best about 4to12maths

· It makes the children enthusiastic about maths.

· Children are not conscious about who is finishing first and who is finishing last when they are practicing.

· It enhances problem solving capabilities.

· The website is continuously developing with competitions being added.

· It improves maths of primary school children.


Suggestions

· 4to12maths is an ideal platform for a separate ‘Problem Solving’ module.

· More colour coding of skills.





Use Case #2 : A school with shared IT resources

How I use 4to12maths in my class

· I set up my class with different default grades for different pupils depending on their ability.

· During the allotted time the children used the computer room to practice and master skills.

· I used focused learning to set out what I wanted the children to practice. Children used the website both in the class and at home, especially during school holidays.

· I set awards for the children to redeem against homework off.


What I like best about 4to12maths

· Getting the children to practice Maths was easy and the challenge in some cases was stopping them doing too much.

· Pupils can use the website both at home and in school

· The website is great for improving the maths of those weaker than their peers.

· Awards caught the attention of the pupils and acted as an incentive to help them master a significant number of skills.


Suggestions

· Make it clearer how teachers should use awards. This is especially the case where you want every child to be able to claim an award once.

· Enhance reports for teachers.

.I used focused learning to set homework for the children. Where the children had broadband access at home they carried out homework through the website. Where they didn’t they carried out alternate homework.

.Awards are set for children and redeemed against “Homework Off Voucher”


What I like best about 4to12maths

.The children were eager to do maths and were proud of the number of skills they had mastered.

.The website is relevant for children of all maths levels.

.The ability to use it for homework even where all the children didn’t have broadband access at home.

.Awards focus the minds of children.


Suggestions

.More user-friendly reports and include charts.

.Linking online question with an offline task. For example, how many steps is it to the nearest door or find a rectangle from where you are sitting and count the number of sides it has.

How I use 4to12maths in my class

.Classs(es) set up on 4to12maths.com and grade relevant to each pupils ability is selected. This allowed me to select an earlier or later grade depending on student ability

.During school hours pupils use laptops to practice and master skills

.As all children have broadband at home, homework is set through focused learning on the website and I can see via the reports whom has completed the homework. If problems with broadband at home I provide alternative homework for children.

.Awards are set for children and redeemed against “Homework Off Vouchers”


What I like best about 4to12maths

.It can be used by children of all maths levels

.Anything that makes my pupils positive about maths is a good thing

.It makes me more productive when teaching in that I don’t have to spend as much time on maths in class but still get better results.

.Stars and awards serve are a positive feedback for the students


Suggestions

.My pupils have used the website intensively so a lot of skills mastered. Where I want to include as homework or as focused learning a skill that has been mastered by some (but maybe not all), can I reset the score the zero. NB. this suggestions has since been added to the website.

.Some reports that show at a glance how students are doing across the curriculum and highlighting areas of difficulty.
